Choose Toys Wisely!

Selecting Toys for Your Baby. Can you remember your child days? Perhaps a couple of decades ago we used to have a very limited number of toys like dolls and toy cars. But now the times have changed and children have become extremely demanding on their parents to get them various toys. But it is your job to choose them with care.

Is it educational or just for entertainment?

Every child likes to have a fun time with toys, smile and laugh out loud. But toys are not just meant to entertain your child. It will also grow their intellectual capacity if used properly. A lot of parents would like to give fancy toys which will keep the child busy ignoring the educational value of them. When it comes to educating your child, you have to get the toys that match their age group.

Until 6 months old: they will be looking to experience colors, sounds and explore other senses. Your selections should be colorful, not too small to swallow/put inside nose but at the same time which will allow them to experience colors and perform small actions such as holding, squeezing etc.

6 months to 1 year: Now the child can do more complex movements such as changing toys from one hand to another, play around with parts of toys etc. So you can present them with a little more complex toys.

1 year to 2 year: This is a phase of rapid growth in the child’s intellectual abilities and understanding about the size, shape, color and space. You can present with toys such as building blocks, toys where they can insert into one another (fit right shape of pegs to different holes) etc. When getting much closer to 2nd year of life, he/she might even start enjoying having a ‘play house’ with small cups and saucer sets, dolls or playing with toy cars etc depending on the sex of the child.

2 years to 4 years: This is where action begins. Your kid will try to do all sorts of experiments within his range, even poking the fingers in to very dangerous places! So, make sure that they have enough interesting things to keep themselves busy. Crayons (pastel), paint, art boards, LEGO sets, building blocks, toy cars, puzzles etc will ignite your child’s creative and intellectual capabilities.

Is it Safe?

You child is the apple of your eye! So don’t give anything that can potentially harm the little one. So always introduce more complex items such as scissors and knives etc only when they are old enough for such items. Some toys have small parts that can cause choking, so read all warnings on a toy's packaging. Toys should be large enough so that they can't be swallowed or lodged in the windpipe. Avoid marbles, coins, balls, and games with balls that are 1.75 inches (4.4 centimeters) in diameter or less because they can become lodged in the throat above the windpipe and restrict breathing if swallowed.

Introduce Habit of Reading

This is one of the best things that you can do to your child. In today’s world full of technology and gadgets, children are losing their imagination rapidly because of the lack of time spent reading and mentally picturing the incidents and concepts. Therefore, try to introduce few books with large images and bigger writing for them to enjoy & instill the habit of reading. Also, try to discuss with them about the stories/elements and characters in the books. You can even encourage them to recite the story in their own words to develop their verbal capabilities and memory.
